Inventing University

One interesting thing I found and can relate to is when author says "the students have to appropriate (or be appropriated by) a specialized discourse, and they have to do this as though they were easily and comfortably one with their audience, as though they were members of the academy,..."

I majored in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. When I started taking accounting classes, I was really overwhelmed not only by the concept of the accounting principle but also all the new jargons that I have to learn to be comfortable with the subject.

In several of our accounting classes, we had to work on presentation and present them in front of the instructors and the students. I could not imagin myself standing in front of the audience and utter somethings that made no sense at all. What an embrassing that would be!! For this reason, I studied and worked hard to overcome this weakness. After taking several classess, although I still don't know everything about accounting, at least I am able to, comfortably, ask questions intellegently, and am able to carry on a conversation at some level within this discourse community.
